Do you like comedy? Do you like making other people laugh? Then this class is for you! We will go over the basics of improv comedy and will teach you how to have your friends on the floor laughing. We will do lots of interactive games and activities to teach you the basic "rules" of comedy! No experience required!

A1364: Pottery: Intro to Wheel Throwing Full!

This class is for any beginner that wants to get hands-on experience on the pottery wheel. You will be taken through all steps of the process, from wedging the clay before getting on the wheel to trimming a foot. Finished pieces will be fired and mailed to you! The course is listed as 2 hours and 50 minutes, but you are not required to stay for the entire time. We ask that you arrive on time, but you can leave once you are finished and content with your wheel-thrown piece.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should come to this workshop! You will have the chance to learn a dance that is similar to what dance teams perform at football and basketball games and learn what it is like to be on a dance team.

A1407: How to Make Photos Without a Camera Full!

This course will teach students how to use both the darkroom as well as the sun itself to create photograms and cyanotypes without the use of a camera. The course will last 2 hours, but the lesson will probably not take the whole two hours. Students may leave after they've created a print.

This course will cover the archetypal hero and its journey contrasted against the growing popularity of the antihero in today's culture. We will cover various examples of different literary and film characters, from Sherlock Holmes to Harry Potter to analyze this shift. This class will be discussion based.

R1338: The Coldest War: Modern Authoritarianism and Russia's Relations with the West

We will be exploring modern Russia's stable authoritarianism under Vladimir Putin as well as the country's rapidly-deteriorating relations with the West. More specifically, we will look closely at current events in Eastern Ukraine, Syria, and Russia itself to unpack a complex relationship between the U.S. and Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Topics to be covered will include Russian militarization, media censorship, diplomatic relations, etc.

R1393: Model UN Simulation: Hunger Games

Come take part in a Model UN Joint Crisis Committee as delegates representing members of President Snow's or President Coin's Cabinet. You will be assigned positions once you arrive to committee. After the explosion of the 75th Hunger Games arena, cells of rebellion have erupted in all the districts of Panem. If assigned to be a member of President Snow's Cabinet, you will be debating how to restore order to the Districts in such a way as to ensure their further allegiance to the Capitol. If assigned to be a member of President Coin's Cabinet, you will be debating how the rebellion can be spread to the other Districts to limit the Capitol’s control. We will go over how to participate in a Model UN Joint Crisis Committee briefly before the debate begins, so no extensive Model UN experience is required.

Read the four page long background guide that will be emailed to you before BC Splash. Do NOT prepare a position paper, as you will not know your position in committee until arrival.

High temperature superconductors represent one of the most exciting unsolved puzzles in modern physics. SPACE! It's (literally) all around us! In October alone we faced: A SuperMoon that turned red, the news that water exists on Mars, AND "The Martian" opening in theaters. Join us as we demonstrate the science of what it takes to get into space using math and a space flight simulator to discuss how launch, orbit around the Earth and further flight is achieved. It's not Rocket Science! (But it is a little).

Models will be used to demonstrate physical phenomena that are governed by the fundamental laws of mechanics, electricity & magnetism, and thermodynamics. We will talk about ocean life in the Galapagos Islands and there will be lots of cool pictures and videos. We will also talk about ocean conservation and what we can do to help save our oceans!

S1403: The Physics and Biochemistry of Taylor Swift Lyrics

"Drop everything now. Meet me in the pouring rain..." "Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street..." "Baby now we've got bad blood..." Taylor Swift is more than just your typical country-pop icon. I don't know about you...but to her fans, her lyrics demand careful attention and analysis. From them, we gain important lessons about love, heartbreak, and being fearless.

Taylor's lyrics also raise many questions about basic physical and biochemical processes. With what velocity and acceleration does Taylor drop everything? With what force will she collide her Maserati at the end of the dead-end street? What are the biochemical foundations that lead to common disorders of the blood?

We will be using the lyrics of Taylor Swift as a starting point to explore the introductory concepts in physics and biochemistry that make us excited about science while also providing a space for reflection on the role of Taylor Swift in our lives and worlds!

X1363: BC Splash Leader Meet and Greet

Come join our fantastic and knowledgeable Splash Leaders who will lead fun activities, and much more! These Boston College students (Splash Leaders) will even bring you to your first class. Participating in fun small group activities will help you meet other Splash and Boston College students. You will also get a chance to meet back up with your small group for lunch! When you arrive at Splash, you will find out who your Splash Leader will be. This will be the only option offered at 9 AM.
