Life is almost universally identifiable. We all know it when we see it, more or less. So why is it so hard to define? Understanding the property that animates matter was the goal of early biologists, but as the years marched on, this began to change. Modern biology focuses on the characterization of the specific substrate in hopes of discovering exploitable biological machinery. This class goes back to the roots of biology and uses our modern understanding of organic life and its dynamics (with a focus on life's informational properties) to ask once again the old question: what exactly is the physical phenomenon of life?
