Brief Biographical Sketch:

Ian Yu, a native of Amherst, Massachusetts, has always been captivated by math and patterns. He does not believe in the myth of the "math person" or the "not math person." Even, and especially if you think of yourself as a "math-hater," Ian invites you to come to his class and catch of glimpse of what it is like for math to be "emotional, creative, and collaborative." He has been researching Imaginary Binary for two and a half years and counting, and is excited to share these ideas with you!

S2108: Imaginary Binary: What Happens When You Play Around With Math? in BC Splash Fall 2021 (Nov. 14, 2021)
You may have heard of base 10 (decimal) or base 2 (binary), but what happens if a base is an imaginary number? Is that even possible??? Be inspired by the story of two high school students' exploration of that question, and how playing around with math led to joy and fulfillment. The course content will mainly focus on how to do math in the epic new world of Imaginary Binary.
