R456: A Historical Analysis of The Civil War through Film: Fact Versus Fiction in Splash Spring 2012 (Apr. 01, 2012)
This is a class for movie lovers! The course will be discussion based and revolve around a historical analysis of film clips extracted from movies set during American wars. How can we tell if the clip is historically accurate or not? In a wartime climate, things are not always black and white (no pun intended, but we promise not to bore you with lots of old movies). We will specifically focus on the Civil War. We will recreate the Civil War by doing a simulation. Splitting the class into the North versus the South, we will work as teams to beat out the opposition. The winners of the simulation do not need to be historically accurate – so bring you’re A game and be ready to win some prizes! Note: Some of the films may be bloody and portray some negative aspects of our nation’s history. We think it is important that we look at these elements and figure out the truths and falsehoods concerning the statements each film is trying to make. Although some of the films may be rated R, we will only use clips from the films that are relevant to our discussion. Such films will include: • Glory (1989) • Gettysburg (1993) • Gone with the Wind (1939) • Shenandoah (1965) • Gods and Generals (2003) • Birth of a Nation (1915) • The Red Badge of Courage (1951)
