R1432: Armed State Building: Why it succeeds, why it fails in Splash Spring 2016 (Apr. 03, 2016)
The U.S. has frequently engaged in military operations that sought to rebuild state institutions following conflict since 1898. Aside from Japan and West Germany following WWII, most have failed to meet their stated objectives. This course will explore why this is the case. What mistakes have been made in the past and what policy decisions should be made to avoid these failures in the future? We will also explore why other states engage in armed state building in the first place. Students will be able to play the role of President, and decide what they would do in various circumstances.
