Brief Biographical Sketch:

Matthew was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. He is currently a second-year undergraduate in College of Arts and Sciences at BC- double majoring in Economics & Biology with a Pre-Law concentration as a member of the Honors and Presidential Scholars Program, respectively. While at BC, Matthew has been an active member of the community. He believes that the actual application of knowledge is a necessity. In his freshman year, Matthew started a small corporation known as the Cura Group LLC that offers small business to college counseling. Additionally, he is an active leader for several student organizations on campus including Asian Caucus and the UGBC Senate, where he chairs the Policy Committee.

At BC, Matthew enjoys studying everything from the natural sciences to philosophy. He has held various internships from the medical field to being a student ambassador to Western Europe. Most recently, Matthew was appointed as the youngest Visiting Research Associate in the history of the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines where he helped to design healthcare and policy initiatives to aid millions of poor urban families. He is currently researching healthcare and socio-economic discrepancies amongst the Asian population at home and abroad.

During his free time, Matthew enjoys reading, writing, and conversing about any subject- with classical music in the background. (Chopin is a must.) To exercise, he practices martial arts and runs. He loves relaxing with his family, especially outdoors.

R691: Asian-Americans: The Great Silent Minority in Splash Fall 2012 (Nov. 04, 2012)
Asian-Americans have long been considered the "great silent minority" in American politics. Despite the fact that Asian immigration to the U.S. increases every year and despite the success of Asian-Americans in many facets of American society, there has yet to be a wave of Asian-American civic and political involvement- a truly influential, and momentous source of change if it were to come about. This course will examine some of the socio-economic reasons behind this status quo, potential opportunities to increase civic engagement, and the implicit potential in the up and coming Asian-American leaders of our generation.

How would it feel to have more than 24 hours in a day? Although this would be impossible physically, it is certainly possible mentally. We will explore numerous techniques to help you hack life and get more than 24 hours out of your normal day. Topics addressed will include basic to advanced life management, time optimization, speed reading, sleeping tactics, and more.

Health affects every human being, and the provision of health is a human right- necessary for anyone to even function. Health transcends borders, and global health is the area of study that attempts to provide health for all around the world. Yet, this is a monumental task, incorporating governments to volunteers in developing nations. This course allows students to examine policy organizations like the World Health Organization to current health challenges like the Millennium Development Goals. Students will especially learn ways to initiate and be involved with global health projects while in high school.
