Brief Biographical Sketch:
Mike is a junior studying chemistry and philosophy at BC. Having always enjoyed science and math, Mike joined the Kantrowitz Biochemistry research group in the fall of his freshman year. There, he conducts research on the E. coli enzymes that construct pyrimidine nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA. Outside of the lab, Mike is involved with the 4Boston Volunteers program, the BC Splash program, and lectors at masses on campus through the Campus Ministry. Mike previously taught the class "Real Chemistry, True Explosions" with Tom Kelly in spring and fall 2012; in spring 2013, he taught "Cool Chemistry: The Science of the Very Chilly" and "Chemistry: Flames, Fire, and Heat" (both with Tom). All the classes bring science (especially chemistry) to you with lots of exciting, hands on demos (many with food!), so sign up or stop by our classes for some science fun! S769: Chemistry: Flames, Fire, and Heat in Splash Spring 2013 (Apr. 07, 2013)
Formerly part of 'Real Chemistry, True Explosions', this semester we're breaking it up to get you more of fun and more of the adventure.
Enjoy shows like Mythbusters or interested in science at all? In this class we offer everyone an opportunity to get their fill of hands-on excitement as we experiment with fire, heat, and explosions. We will also discuss the science involved so that we can all learn in a safe and academic environment. This class is always packed, so sign up quickly!
S776: Cold Chemistry: The Science of the Very Chilly in Splash Spring 2013 (Apr. 07, 2013)
Taught by the same teachers who brought you “Real Chemistry, True Explosions” at past Splash weekends, this semester we’re bringing you two chemistry classes for a new spin!
Do you enjoy watching shows like Mythbusters or Modern Marvels? Interested in science, especially chemistry? Enjoy hands-on demos that involve food?! Then sign up for this class! We’ll explore the icy tundra of cold chemistry by playing with liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and other frigid specimens! Sign up now before the class fills up!
S464: True Chemistry, Explosive Reactions in Splash Spring 2012 (Apr. 01, 2012)
With centuries of history going back to the earliest alchemists, chemistry has long held an important role in civilization. Join us while we explore the science behind some most exciting and powerful displays allowable for the class room. Reactions of acids, pressure, color, and even flame will all be unraveled through our demonstrations.
