R1274: Speak Now: Activism through Performance Poetry in Splash Spring 2015 (Mar. 29, 2015)
Often times, art can express ideas and feelings we otherwise would have no way of tapping into or sharing with others. However, art in this form is most meaningful when it can motivate change, eliciting an emotional response from an audience who will hopefully be inspired to view human rights and social responsibility in a new and more personal light. It illuminates the questions: Who am I in relation to the greater world in which I live? How must I treat each person I interact with? How can my ideals about human compassion be made relevant to the society at large and the social structures that quiet the voices of so many? In this class, we will undertake a writing and performing workshop to answer such questions in the hopes of inspiring your audience to reflect on the same issues and act on the injustices you examine through your poetry.

We will explore the history of sign language, its evolution, and the various types of sign language used by deaf people today, including ASL, Pidgin Signs, "Childrenese", etc. Finally, we will go over finger-spelling and basic signs, allowing students to broaden their scope of communication.

A775: Karate: A Love Story in Splash Spring 2013 (Apr. 07, 2013)
As an art form, Karate has been commonly misperceived as a violent and aggressive means of harming others, completely unprovoked. However, in reality, the martial arts truly provide a better frame of mind in which to love both ourselves and others. While we will discuss the underlying and often overlooked philosophical aspect of the martial arts, we will also go over basic self defense techniques and a variation of moves used in sport-karate as well!
