Television, social media, the music industry, and all other mediums of popular culture allow for the exploitation of the female body and persona. Women have reduced to their physical assets time and time again rather than presented as individuals with unique stories and ambitions that accompany these tales.
The purpose of this class it to discuss the institutions that allow for the sexualization of young women, promote rigid images of gender roles and identities, and the repercussions of this narrow image surrounding mental health and body image issues. We will examine cases in various forms of media in order to target the core of the issue and stimulate discourses that promote a move away from female sexualization and a move toward healthy portrayals of women.
